Having a negative perception of masculinity is linked to worse mental health, study finds

Article here. Excerpt:

'Holding the view that masculinity negatively impacts one’s behavior is associated with lower mental well-being, according to a new study of more than 4,000 men. The findings shed light on the relationship between societal perceptions of masculinity and individual mental health, challenging previous notions that masculine attitudes are inherently harmful or detrimental. The study was published in the International Journal of Health Sciences.

For decades, masculinity has been a topic of both public and academic debate. Historically, traits like being active, dominant, and self-contained were synonymous with masculinity. However, from the 1980s, there was a notable shift. Masculinity began to be viewed through a more critical lens, often associated with negative traits like misogyny and homophobia, and linked to issues such as poor mental health and aggressive behavior.

The White House wants to close the gap on health care research for women

Article here. Excerpt:

'President Joe Biden on Monday announced the first-ever White House Initiative on Women’s Health Research, which will be led by First Lady Jill Biden and the White House Gender Policy Council. The new initiative will be chaired and coordinated by Dr. Carolyn Mazure, who recently joined the White House from the Yale School of Medicine.
...
Biden explained that earlier this year, Maria Shriver, the former first lady of California, approached her about a need for greater effort both inside and outside of government to close long-standing gaps in women’s health research. To Biden, Shriver’s call resonated with something she said she had long seen — that research into conditions that mostly affect women or affect women differently than men have long been underfunded and that “these gaps are even greater for communities that have historically been excluded from research, including women of color and women with disabilities.”

Single motherhood: Raising children alone, by choice

Article here. Excerpt:

'Some people think raising a child without a partner is incomplete, like someone cut a man out of your proper family portrait and now there’s just a gaping hole. But what if, as in the case of Hargrove and Washington, you chose to enter this massively hard state of motherhood as the primary parent, completing your family as you see fit? Neither one of them were banking on one day marrying and having someone with which to share the load equally. They were committing to the buck stopping with them. And it’s worked.'

New psychology research shows people are more willing to harm men than women for the greater good

Article here. Excerpt:

'Recent research reveals a striking gender bias in how people perceive and accept instrumental harm, which occurs when harm is inflicted on some individuals to achieve a greater good. The study, published in the Archives of Sexual Behavior, found that people tend to be more willing to accept harm to men than to women in various contexts, even when women are traditionally expected to sacrifice more.

Utilitarianism, a moral philosophy that justifies causing harm to some individuals if it leads to a greater overall good, has been the subject of much philosophical debate. It encompasses two key elements: instrumental harm and impartial beneficence. Instrumental harm allows for the harm of innocent individuals for the greater good, while impartial beneficence requires prioritizing the greater good above personal attachments and biases.'

Survey Shows Major Decline in Gen-Z Men Identifying as Feminists Compared to Previous Generations

Article here. Excerpt:

'Amongst baby boomers, Gen-Xers, millennials, and Gen-Z, the latter generation represented the largest divide between sexes when it came to views on feminism. 61 percent of Gen-Z women, versus just 43 percent of the generation’s men, agree that they’re feminists. As for millennials, a nearly equal number of men and women—52 percent and 54 percent, respectively—felt that the feminist label applied to them.'

The "Man-Hating Feminist" Is A Misleading Myth, New Study Shows

Article here. Excerpt:

'The idea that feminists are man-haters has a long and sticky history, but is it true? Well, not according to a massive new study conducted by an international team of researchers.

According to the study, which involved nearly 10,000 participants from various Western and non-Western cultures, feminists tend to hold positive attitudes towards men in ways that are comparable to non-feminists. This finding challenges long-held stereotypes that portray and dismiss feminists as simply anti-male.

Feminism has achieved many laudable advances for women and girls, as well as men and boys, since it became a formal political and social movement in the mid-19th century. But even in their earliest days, feminists were condemned as anti-male (misandry) advocates. This trope continues to be used to delegitimize and discredit feminists and, in many ways, has deterred some from joining the movement. In more extreme cases, such a representation has even inspired men to engage in aggressive and violent opposition.'

Study finds racial (and gender) disparities in whether US judges impose prison

Article here. Excerpt:

'Black and Hispanic defendants in federal court are less likely than white ones to be sentenced to probation rather than prison, a difference that largely accounts for the racial disparities in the punishments judges impose, according to a new study.
...
Women of all races received 29.2% shorter sentences on average than men and were 39.6% more likely to receive probation, the study found.'

Sabrina Carpenter’s Feminist Music Video Celebrates The Gruesome Killing Of Men

Article here. Excerpt:

'It’s not often in popular culture that mainstream feminism bares its fangs and owns up to its true nature without hiding behind the “all we want is equality” mantra. But that’s exactly what happened last week, when ex-Disney star turned mediocre pop singer Sabrina Carpenter posted the music video for her new single “Feather,” where she desecrates a Catholic church and glorifies the killing of men. Thus far, the video has garnered over 6 million views.

Feather creates a fantasy world that finds Carpenter enabling and enjoying the deaths of the men who hit on her. In the first scene, a group of men, distracted from catcalling Carpenter, are struck by a truck, to which Carpenter responds with a simple shrug.
...
The message from the music video is clear: men’s “toxic” masculinity turns them into serial sex harassers, and in this female fantasy, a satisfied Carpenter gets to watch them all die gruesome deaths.'

How gender disparities are affecting men

Article here. Excerpt:

'In 1972, when Title IX was passed to help improve gender equality on campus, men were 13% more likely to get an undergraduate degree than women; today, according to the National Center for Education Statistics, it's women who are 15% more likely to get a degree than men.

"We have a bigger gender gap today than we did when we passed laws to help women and girls; it's just flipped," said Richard Reeves, a former Brookings Institution senior fellow. He says, no one really has been able to explain why so many men are so absent in higher education. What is known is the gender disparity starts as early as kindergarten, where girls are just generally the stronger sex in academics.

Reeves said, "If you look at high school GPA, and those who are getting the best grades in high school, two-thirds of them are girls. Those with the lowest grades, two-thirds of them are boys."'

Life expectancy gap between men and women in the US widened significantly during the Covid-19 pandemic

Article here. Excerpt:

'Women in the United States can expect to live nearly six years longer than men, as disparities in deaths from Covid-19 and drug overdoses drive the life expectancy gap to the widest it’s been in decades.

Overall, life expectancy in the US fell more than two and a half years since the start of the pandemic — down to 76.1 years in 2021, according to data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Life expectancies for both men and women were affected, but not equally.
...
But men have had significantly higher mortality rates from many other leading causes of death in recent years, according to a new study, and multiple converging factors are driving a wider gap.

Woke Britons want to ban iconic 1,500 year old hill carving over 'toxic masculinity' fears

Article here. Excerpt:

'Woke complainers want to ban the famous carving of the Cerne Abbas giant and its penis from a magazine cover over claims it is a symbol of “toxic masculinity”.
...
Writing on Camra’s Discourse messaging site, advertising rep John Galpin said: “It’s immature masculinity.

“It sends a message that members are little boys who make penis jokes.

“Any woman seeing that could be excused for thinking Camra is full of men waving their penises around whilst drinking beer.

“At a time when we are trying to be more inclusive it’s totally inappropriate. I for one wouldn’t want anything to do with it.”'

Jezebel shuts down, lays off staff in ‘excruciating’ decision, parent company says

Article here. Excerpt:

'Jezebel, the punchy feminist blog with an outsized influence on internet culture, will suspend operations and lay off its staff effective immediately, its parent company G/O Media said Thursday as it announced broader restructuring in its portfolio of digital news outlets.

Jim Spanfeller, chief executive of G/O Media, said in a memo to staff obtained by CNN that the company had tried to sell the publication, but that after talks with two dozen potential buyers, “we could not find Jez a new home.”

“As of this week we are making the very, very difficult decision to suspend publication of Jezebel,” Spanfeller said. “Few decisions over the course of my career have been as excruciating, and I want to make clear this is in NO WAY a reflection on the Jezebel editorial team.”'

I use this hack to shame cheap men who want to split the bill — guys say it’s ‘manipulative’

Article here. Excerpt:

'This “100% genius” hack will get 50/50 cheapos in check.

Splitting the bill on a first date has become a topic of contention amongst singletons online with dissenting views on whether a guy should be solely responsible for picking up the tab during the inaugural outing.

But one shady dater has devised a deliciously devious trick that’s sure to leave tightfisted fellas with egg on their faces.

“When a man wants to go 50/50 with you on a date, do this,” began going-out guru Pearl Botts, an aspiring singer from Los Angeles, in a trending TikTok how-to, advising all the singles ladies on best practices for politely jabbing a prospective partner who expects them to pay.
...
“Wait, you wanted to just be friends?” she asked condescendingly. “I’m so confused. This entire time I thought this was a date. I’m so sorry, here’s my card.”
